Stryker Lynn "Mish"
Bauter built fishing boats in his Hammondsport boat shop from the 1920s into the
1940s. An avid fisherman himself, he built a functional boat specifically designed
for trout fishing on Keuka Lake.
Bauter's "one-man" (12 ft)
trout boats are characterized by carvel
planking (13 planks per side) clinch nailed to steamed oak
full-length
ribs, a rounded transom set plumb to the water, a two-piece gunwale (inwale &
outwale), and a scalloped forward deck beam.
Bauter trout boats are stable in the water, due to their relatively flat bottom. They are easily propelled by oars or a stern "kicker".
