Workshops scheduled at Curtiss throughout the extended display
The Glenn Curtiss Museum will be the site for numerous hands on workshops hosted by FLBM. New and seasoned boaters alike can get their New York State Boater Safety course from Steuben County’s Officer Merriam. If you have had a little trouble with your outboard engine in the past, Dick Newcomb will be hosting a work shop on trouble shooting your outboard engine. If you have had or anticipate having a lot of trouble with your engine this year, Nick Watts will be hosting a paddle making workshop. Ed Wightman will take you through each step of recanvassing a canoe and in a separate workshop he will also be teaching participants the finer points of wood bending. Ralph Halling will be offering his expertise in the area of epoxy and resins in wooden boat repair. See below for more details!

NEW YORK SAFE BOATER CERTIFICATION
Saturday, March 29 and Saturday April 5 from 9:00 – 1:00. FLBM is not only preserving the boating history of the Finger Lakes, but is also supporting safe use today’s boats. As you may know, persons under the age of 18 must have a NYS Boating Safety Certificate to independently operate a motorized boat. All persons must have the Certificate to operate a personal water craft. Workshop leader: Officer Jack Merriam, Steuben Co. Sheriff’s Marine Department. Call the Steuben County Sheriff’s office to register, 607-776-3347. $5 donation at the workshop.
PADDLE MAKING
Sunday, April 13 from 1:00pm to 4:00
Bring your favorite block plane and spoke shave with you for this one. Each student will be given a blank of stock from which they will make their own paddle. We will be making a basic flat blade paddle and each student will go home with their newly made paddle. Also included is a demonstration of making a spoon shaped blade. Workshop leader: Nick Watts $40
WOOD BENDING
Saturday, April 19 from 9:00 – 12:00
Using both steam and boiling methods, students will bend a variety of wood over a variety of jigs. Woods include, white cedar, elm, white oak, mahogany and the types of bends will be stems, ribs (canoe and rowboat) planks, stems, cockpit coming and more. $35
BOAT CANVASSING
Saturday, April 26, from 9:00 – 1:00
Participants will canvas a 1946 Penn Yan 18’ Owasco canoe. The traditional #10 canvas will be used. The planks will be treated with oil for preservation and the canvas will be treated with an antifungal filler. Workshop leader: Ed Wightman $25.00
TROUBLE SHOOTING YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR

Having trouble with your outboard motor? Then you need this workshop. Participants will learn how to troubleshoot common outboard motor problems. With a little know-how, most of these problems can be owner fixed. Motors will be available for hands on, but you may bring your own. Workshop leader: Dick Newcomb $25
EPOXY & FIBERGLASS IN WOODEN BOAT REPAIR
Saturday, May 10 from 10:00 – Noon
Participants will learn; how to laminate pieces of wood, use epoxy for fairing, the different properties of West System fillers, #s 403, 410, etc. and how to use matt and glass cloth and much more. Workshop leader: Ralph Hullings $20
