May,2007 FLBM Lines - Taking Workshop

In keeping with our mission to collect, preserve and share boating history; the Museum occasionally documents the design and construction of a boat built in the Finger Lakes region. This workshop will measure and record the design of a boat. The process, called lines-taking, involved measuring the hull at various pre-determined locations and documenting the measurements along with construction notes on a boat plan drawing.

The boat is mounted and aligned over a lofting table which had been lined off with a grid to facilitate measuring.

Two teams of people will take the prescribed measurements and record them in a table of offsets.

The offset table is then used to develop the boat plan, which documents the design and may be used to replicate the boat if desired.
