Finger Lakes Boating Museum Local Builder Profile
Mish Bauter Keuka Lake
Stryker Lynn "Mish" Bauter

Stryker Lynn "Mish" Bauter built fishing boats in his Hammondsport boat shop from the 1920s into the 1940s. An avid fisherman himself, he built a functional boat specifically designed for trout fishing on Keuka Lake.

Bauter's "one-man" (12 ft) trout boats are characterized by carvel planking (13 planks per side) clinch nailed to steamed oak
full-length ribs, a rounded transom set plumb to the water, a two-piece gunwale (inwale & outwale), and a scalloped forward deck beam.

Bauter trout boats are stable in the water, due to their relatively flat bottom. They are easily propelled by oars or a stern "kicker".
