Finger Lakes Boating Museum From Our Collection
Penn Yan Saint Lawrence Skiff

The St. Lawrence Skiff first appeared in the 1927 catalog. Built using Composite construction, the 16 ft. boat weighed only 100 lbs. and contained four seats and two sets of oarlocks. By 1929, she had been renamed the Penn Yan Double End Rowboat, perhaps in recognition of some substantial differences between her and the boats built along the St. Lawrence River. The boat was dropped from subsequent catalogs, possibly due to demand for fishing boats that could accommodate an outboard motor.

The boat shown here, now part of the Museum’s Collection, was purchased new in 1927 for use at a family “camp” on a lake in the Adirondack Mountains. In the early 1960s the boat was rediscovered under the porch of the cottage, and stored thereafter in the roof rafters. She is in remarkable condition, having developed a rich patina and bearing here original Penn Yan Boat Company decals on her deck and oars.
