Angler Runabout

The Angler Boat Company of Penn Yan, NY was established in 1951 by the owner of PennYan Boats, Inc. to build private label boats primarily for Sears and Montgomery Wards. Originally these boats were built using the cedar strip technique. During the latter 1950s, Sears approached Angler with a request to assist the Yellow Jacket Boat Company of Texas, a supplier of boats for Sears, with the production of molded plywood boats. Molded hulls were shipped north to Penn Yan where they were finished by Angler for distribution by Sears under their Elgin label. This arrangement lasted for one year, and an unknown quantity of these boats was produced.

The boat shown here was once owned by the foreman in charge of molded boat production at Angler. It carries a steering wheel marked "Elgin", the Sears tradename, but probably was never sold by Sears.
