Bauter Sailboat

Mish Bauter (see biography) of Hammondsport, NY built this gaff-rigged catboat in 1932. The sailboat was a departure from the rowboats Mr. Bauter was famous for building during the 1920s – 1940’s, and was built for his daughter Dorothy who had asked for a sailboat. Reputedly the boat was patterned after ones seen on the Chesapeake. The boat passed through the hands of several people before its donation to the Museum in 1999. A former owner described the boat as being a bit “tender” to handle in high winds, and therefore was usually sailed in the evening when the winds were light.
