Penn Yan Ensign (LD) Dinghy

The Penn Yan Boat Company was noted for their wooden dinghies, having produced them from the 1920s through 1964. They were frequently carried as standard equipment on large cruisers, and were popular tenders for moored sailboats. The dinghies were offered in several lengths (from 7 to 12 feet), and were built using various construction techniques.

The boat shown here is a 9FT Ensign (model LD), offered by Penn Yan in a stock color of white from 1940 – 1959. She was built using Penn Yan’s Composite construction process (canvas covering over cedar planking). Her relatively low hull number suggests production in the 1940s. The boat has been placed on long term loan to the Museum.
