Penn Yan Flier Trailboat (GT)

Penn Yan introduced the Trailboat line in 1948. Built in 12ft and 14 ft lengths with various optional deck configurations, this popular boat was offered by Penn Yan through 1959.  Cedar planked over steam bent oak ribs and canvas covered, Trailboats are easily recognized by the presence of the double-loop bronze grab bar affixed to the bow of the boat. This feature readily differentiates them from their lighter weight cousins, the Penn Yan CarTops.

Junior and Standard model Trailboats have displacement hulls and were designed for rowing or propulsion by small outboard motors. The Flier GT series are high speed planning models designed for larger motors (5 – 16hp). The boat shown in the photo is a 14 ft open-deck Flier model. The donor’s father purchased the boat new in 1952 along with the 3hp Evinrude Lightwin motor, and it was enjoyed by the family on Keuka Lake for over 50 years until its donation to the Museum in 2007.
