Penn Yan Solo Fishing Boat

The Finger Lakes region of New York State has long been known for its excellent trout fishing. Before the advent of outboard motors, there was a strong demand for small rowboats designed for trout fishing on the lakes. Boatbuilding became a cottage industry, as numerous small boat shops were opened to serve to this market.  Penn Yan’s 1927 catalog listed their one-time offering for this market. Known as the Solo Fishing Boat, the 12 FT canvas-covered rowboat weighed 80 lbs. Penn Yan claimed one man could “take it from the water and put it on the running board of his car.”

The boat shown here was restored for its owner, who subsequently placed it on long term loan with the Museum.
