Back before the Erie Canal, Southern Tier farmers used to build arks or rafts to pole or drift their year’s produce down through the rivers to Chesapeake Bay. There they’d sell their goods, then sell the ark for the lumber, and walk back home. Kirk House, director at the Steuben County Historical Society, will talk to us about the days when the rivers were the highways, and a man who worked the land also had to be a man who rode the river
